2012 Workshops

The 2012 Workshops are set for all Districts. Please check your FirstClass Education Conference Calendar, and this first class document regularly as we are frequently booking new workshops.




The following workshops will be provincially-funded:

a)      Executive/Local Function

        1.      How to Run a Local – #1 Admin (for new Local Executive members)
        2.      How to Run a Local – #2 Member Engagement (for new Local Executive members)
        3.      Treasurers’ Workshop (Local Executive members)
        4.      Committees:
                • PRC (for new PRC Committee members)
                • OH&S (for new OH&S Committee members)
         5.      Grievance (for new Grievance Committee members)
        6.      Ward/Office Rep (for new Ward or Office Reps)

To be eligible for funding one must be on the Local Executive (How to Run a Local) or the applicable Committee (PRC, OH&S and  Grievance) or be a Ward/Office/Area Representative. The Local President is ex officio on all committees. Individuals are provincially funded only once per workshop.

        2.      Know Your Rights


Eligible funding includes Local Executive and General Membership. Members are expected to register in workshops closest to their residence.

The Know Your Rights Workshop is designed for NEW members and not intended for Local Executives. This workshop is geared for NEW UNA members - members who have never been active and now may be considering becoming active in their Local. New Local Executive members benefit more from the How to Run a Local workshops.

Funding includes salary replacement and meals. Mileage and accommodation will be provided as required for out-of-town participants. Direct billing for hotel rooms for UNA Workshops is not available. The member will be responsible for paying for their room and then be reimbursed as per UNA policy.

If you are attending the Grievance workshop, the PRC workshop, the Know Your Rights workshop or the Ward/Office Rep workshop please bring your copy of the collective agreement with you.

Any Local Executive can now register members in workshops
using the Events option in the Local Admin tab of the DMS.

You can also register members by emailing the Event Registration Conference on your FirstClass.

The PRC (Professional Responsibility Committee) Workshop offers qualified participants an opportunity to understand the legislative and agreement rights and responsibilities of the registered nurse in delivering compliant care. Increased understanding of the PRC process enhances the ability of nurses to address professional practice concerns and advocate for their patients, residents and or clients. Consequently it provides participants with the tools and skills to engage more effectively with the membership and with the employer representatives.

The Grievance Workshop requires that qualified participants learn more about contract language and investigations in the different types of grievances and the Arbitration process, This workshop provides an overview of the importance of your roles and responsibilities as a UNA grievance representative.   Arbitration is also reviewed in order to understand complexities of the quasi -judicial  grievance resolution process. Grievance meeting role play is an integral and fun part of understanding the nuances of each step of the Collective agreement. As result you will have the tools to more effectively represent your local membership during the Grievance and Arbitration process.

Dealing With Abuse Workshop - Camrose

The "Dealing with Abuse" workshop is designed to provide participants with the ability to recognize the various forms of workplace abuse and violence and how to use legislation and collective agreement language to ensure that the employer eliminates or reduces abuse and violence in the workplace. This workshop assists workers and locals in dealing with abuse and violence as an Occupational Health and Safety hazard and focuses on prevention strategies rather than intervention.

Computer workshop agendas are set according to the needs of those requesting a session. The agenda is modified for each group to maximize the value for each person attending. All people attending a computer workshop are provided with a Macintosh laptop for hands-on activities. Topics might include using FirstClass, the Data Management System (DMS), word processing, etc. If your local has a number of people needing computer assistance, it is possible to request a session for your group.

This will be a hands-on computer session.

The Ward Rep Workshop is designed for those who are Ward/Office Representatives and require additional information on the responsibilities of the position. This workshop covers collective agreement interpretation and the responsibilities of the union in representing UNA's membership. This includes, duty to accommodate, duty of fair, Professional Responsibility (PRC), Occupational Health & Safety, grievances and arbitration as well as other topics. Additionally, it also provides an understanding of the services offered, as well as the structure of United Nurses of Alberta.

This session is intended to introduce the new Treasurer to the responsibilities and tools needed to maintain accurate financial records. Most of the tasks to be completed by the treasurer require the use of UNA Net and hands-on activities are included. You will be guided in understanding and using the messages sent to your Local from Centralized Accounting. Tips are provided for dealing with the financial records of your local and helping you complete an approved budget. The session includes information that helps you handle authorizing and monitoring the expenditure of local money.

Alberta Retired Teachers' Benefit Plan for Retired UNA Members

Do you know a retired UNA member?  Tell them about the new benefit plan.

There will be a one-time open enrollment for anyone who is retired from UNA to enroll in the ARTA between September 1, 2010 and January 31, 2011 without a medical.  When retired UNA members apply during this period, they will be able to access their benefits on the first day of the following month.
